Moving from Tally

Bring your books from Tally.

A guided wizard reads Tally's own XML export and brings your chart of accounts, ledgers, stock and vouchers into Factura Financials. Written for the person running the import and the person approving the move.

What the import is

A one-time, file-based wizard, not a live connection. You export from Tally, point Factura at the file, and the wizard maps Tally's structure into Factura's as it imports.

It reads Tally's own XML export.
The wizard's live import path for Tally 6.3 Release 3 and newer parses that XML directly — the same shape Tally's own XML gateway produces, not a proprietary binary file.
Older Tally releases are also supported, on a different code path.
Tally 4.5 and Tally 5.4 Releases 4, 5 and 6 import from their own flat-file export formats, for books still running an older Tally version.
It runs once, in one direction.
You run the wizard, it imports the file, and it's done — there is no ongoing sync in this feature. A separate feature, Tally-Bridge, does the opposite job: it pushes your Factura masters out to a Tally session that is running live. The two are not the same feature. This page is about the file import into Factura.

The steps, as the wizard implements them

One wizard, a handful of fields, in this order.

  1. Choose ImportThe wizard also does Export, for the opposite job. You pick Import to bring Tally data into Factura.
  2. Point it at your filesBrowse to your masters export and, separately, your daybook export. The wizard reads whichever file has voucher data as the daybook, and the rest as masters.
  3. Set how re-imports are handledChoose Ignore Duplicate. On that setting, re-running the same daybook file skips vouchers it already recognises by their Tally reference. It is the only one of the three that de-duplicates.
  4. Set your financial year start dateYou enter this by hand; it isn't read out of the Tally file.
  5. Pick your Tally versionThe wizard uses this to choose the right code path for your export format.
  6. Run it, and watch it finishA progress step shows masters or daybook updating. When it's done, review what landed before you rely on it.

What comes across

Each of these is read by the wizard's live import path.

Your chart of accounts.
Groups, mapped through Tally's reserved group names rather than copied as free text.
Ledgers, with opening balances.
Including the bill-wise breakup behind an opening balance, and "On Account" balances that have no bill reference at all.
Cost centres, cost categories, currencies and units of measure.
Stock groups and stock items,
including items with a bill-of-materials/component list, each with its own opening balance.
Godowns,
including a primary/sub-godown hierarchy.
Price lists,
with the tiered rate per stock item per price level as well as the price-level names.
Voucher types,
with no filtering: every voucher type present in your export is imported.
Budgets and scenarios.
Your vouchers,
with their inventory allocations, batch allocations, and their own bill-wise references.

What you'll re-create in Factura

Five things the import does not carry, so you can plan for them.

Any TDL customisations.
Custom Tally reports or fields built on TDL aren't read — the import understands Tally's standard master and voucher structure, not a customised one.
Payroll masters and transactions.
Tally's payroll data has no import path here.
File attachments and images
linked to Tally records.
Historical exchange-rate tables.
A currency's conversion rate on an opening balance comes across; the currency's own historical rate table does not.
Tally's alteration and audit trail.
The import brings the data as it stands, not the history of how it got there.

One thing worth knowing before you run it

The order you import in matters more than it looks like it should.

A voucher referencing a master that is not yet in Factura does not stop the import or raise an error — it lands with a blank reference. Import your masters in full before your daybook, and check that nothing was left out of your masters export, rather than finding a gap later in a voucher.

Bring a clean, final export. This is a one-time import, not a running reconciliation — review what landed against your Tally books before you rely on it, the same way you'd check any migration.

Before you ask us

Do you keep syncing with Tally after this?

No, not through this feature. The wizard is a one-time file import. A separate feature, Tally-Bridge, can push Factura's masters out to a live Tally session on an ongoing basis — that's the opposite direction, Factura to Tally, and it's a different conversation from moving your books in.

What if we're on an old version of Tally?

Tally 4.5 and Tally 5.4 Releases 4, 5 and 6 are supported through their own file formats. Tally 6.3 Release 3 and newer use Tally's XML export. Tell us your version and we'll confirm which export to take.

Can we check the import before we rely on it?

Yes — we agree your opening trial balance against your current Tally books before you switch over, the same check we run for any move into Factura Financials. A period run in parallel is available where you want the extra assurance.
